(AcSIR) is Established in 2011 as an ‘Institution of National Importance’ (interim operations started in June, 2010), the Academy of Scientific and Innovative Research (AcSIR) has adopted the mandate to create and train some of the best of tomorrow’s Science & Technology leaders through a combination of innovative and novel curricula, pedagogy and evaluation.
AcSIR’s focus will be on imparting instruction and providing research opportunities in such areas that are not routinely taught in regular academic universities in India.It has been set up based on a ‘Hub and the Spokes’ model where hub is responsible for centralized administrative functions. The spokes are located in the 37 laboratories and 6 units of CSIR spread along the length and breadth of India, which act as actual campuses for different subjects or areas depending on their respective specializations.At present, the Academy has 2478 faculty members from CSIR Laboratories, 36 Adjunct faculty members, Over 3000 students enrolled in various programmes and 21 non-academic staff members.
Various Programs in AcSIR and Eligibilities:
I. PhD in Engineering
(i) A Master’s degree in Engineering or Technology following a four-year engineering/technology or 4/5 year science degree; or an integrated minimum-5-year M Tech degree; or equivalent.
AND
(ii) At least one of the following
(a) Awarded a national-level fellowship (such as NET JRF) tenable at CSIR institutes
(b) Meeting all the conditions required for eligibility for the CSIR-SRF
(c) Meeting all the conditions for award of the INSPIRE fellowship (typically awarded to students ranked first in the University)
(d) Meeting all the conditions stipulated by AcSIR for Project Assistants to register for a PhD
(e) Meeting all the conditions stipulated by AcSIR for industry-sponsored* students.
II. Integrated Dual-Degree PhD (IDDP) Program in Engineering
(i) A 4-year undergraduate degree in Engineering or Science (such as BE/BTech/BS), or a five year degree in Science (such as MSc), or equivalent.
AND
(ii) At least one of the following
(a) Awarded a national-level fellowship (such as NET JRF) tenable at CSIR institutes
(b) Meeting all the conditions required for eligibility for the CSIR-GATE-JRF
(c) Meeting all the conditions for award of the INSPIRE fellowship (typically awarded to students ranked first in the University)
(d) Meeting all the conditions stipulated by AcSIR for Project Assistants to register for a PhD
(e) Meeting all the conditions stipulated by AcSIR for industry-sponsored* students.
* with endorsement from Industry, Academic or Research Institutes for required academic leave and financial support during program.
These are only minimum quality yardsticks of eligibility for consideration for admission and bear no relationship with financial assistance or scholarship. Any stipend, scholarship or financial source for study would be the sole responsibility of the student. AcSIR itself does not provide any such scholarship or have any rule in these matters.
III. PhD (Sciences)
Candidates with a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/ Technology, Medicine or Master’s degree in Science with a keen sense of scientific enquiry for pursuing advanced research in frontier areas of Biological, Chemical, Physical and Mathematical & Information Sciences leading to a Ph.D. degree.
The candidate should be having a valid National level fellowship (JRF/ SRF of various funding agencies, e.g. CSIR, UGC, DBT, DST etc.), INSPIRE or other equivalent fellowships.
Project Assistants, Senior Research Fellows and CSIR Scientists are also eligible to apply (as per AcSIR Ordinance No. 4(5)).
IV. Sponsored PhD (Sciences)
Regular: Master’s degree in Science*
Direct: Undergraduate degree in Science or allied subjects with at least 8.5 and/or 1strank holder in University/ Institution
V. M.Tech
Eligibility :
- A Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Technology following a four-year engineering/technology or 4/5 year science degree or equivalent degree of not less than four years’ duration.
AND
- At least one of the following:
- Awarded a national-level fellowship tenable at CSIR institutes
- Qualifying all the conditions required for eligibility for the CSIR-SRF, or CSIR-GATE-JRF
- Qualifying the conditions for award of the INSPIRE fellowship (typically awarded to students ranked first in the University)
- Qualifying the conditions stipulated by AcSIR for industry-sponsored *students
- A valid GATE score, or CGPA 8.0 from a CFTI at the BE-level examination

VIII. Integrated M.Sc. & Ph.D. in Clinical Research
Integrated M.S. & Ph.D. in Clinical Research is being offered in collaboration with Publich Health Foundation of India (PHFI)
Minimum Eligibility Criteria
- Applicants with graduate qualifications in: medical and allied fields like dentistry, AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy), pharmacy, physiotherapy, nursing and veterinary science
- Applicants with graduate qualifications in: biological and life sciences (microbiology, biochemistry, biotechnology, botany, zoology), basic sciences (chemistry), occupational therapy and bio-statistics
IX. Integrated M.Sc. & Ph.D. in Health Informatics
Integrated M.S. & Ph.D. in Health Informatics is being offered in collaboration with Publich Health Foundation of India (PHFI)
Minimum Eligibility Criteria
Bachelor’s degree, in any science discipline under the 10+2+3 system. Preference will be given to candidates with working experience in health care and information Technology
Admission Procedure:
Admissions to AcSIR PhD programmes are conducted twice in a year. The Participating CSIR Labs announces the admission criteria and procedure of admission through National Dailies and Web media.
Shortlisted candidates fulfilling the shortlisting criteria of respective participating CSIR Labs will be called for test and / or interview by the Selection Committees of the respective laboratories of CSIR.
Based on the Academic record and the performance of the candidates in the test and / or interview, the Selection Committee of the concerned CSIR Laboratory recommends names of the selected candidates to the respective Deans.
The number of candidates called for test/interview will be commensurate with the number of seats/requirements in each laboratory.
