A Good Human Being

Date:

We often look at someone and say, ‘He is a good person’.’That impression comes from the way that person behaves or speaks – how they make us feel. But what really makes someone a ‘good human being?’  or on what basis do we call a person ‘good’? Let us look at some of the qualities such people possess.

One mark of a good person is the ability to respect and value others as they value themselves. It comes from the realization – ‘You are just like me.’ Unfortunately, what we often see is the opposite attitude: Everything should be mine. You deserve nothing   or Respect and honor belong only to me – you are not worthy of them.

Such attitudes are never the ways of a good person.

It is not necessary that a good person should be able to help everyone or fulfill every need. Yet, what matters is the willingness to help others as much as one can. Doing good doesn’t always mean giving money – it can also mean offering guidance, advice or a helping word when needed.

Appreciate the good deeds of others. Many people only wish that others should speak well of them, but they forget that others, too, long to hear words of kindness. Avoid gossip and refrain from spreading rumors. Even if humility does not come naturally, learn to speak with respect toward those who disagree.

Do not treat someone as an enemy just because they hold a different opinion. If there is any good in what they say, be willing to accept it.
We may not be able to make everyone better, but let us at least ensure that we are not the cause of anyone’s downfall. Many people fall into habits like drinking or smoking because of certain company or influence – such relationships can lead a person toward harm. So never be the reason for another’s destruction.

At the end of each day, take a moment for self-reflection.

Did I hurt anyone knowingly? Did I behave improperly toward someone? If there is a chance to make amends, take it. No one is free from mistakes – but a true human being is one who, when he realizes he has done wrong, is willing to correct himself.
